oooh, that's impressive (or not really)

Purple Heart - props, don't know the story so I'll defer to the process and say it's earned.
Most of the rest of those you get:
- periodically for breathing if they are individual, or just for showing up to an assignment (overseas service ribbon)
- for being assigned to a unit...anyone assigned to the unit for that period of time gets it, whether you're a star performer or a slug
- for being alive and in the service during a specific time (GWOT, NDSM)
A couple of those besides the purple heart could possibly indicate stellar performance, but honestly, for an officer with that many years, not that impressive.
Honestly, the way most services give out medals and awards like candy this sort of list really proves nothing about the quality of the individual...it doesn't mean he's awesome, nor does it mean he's not.
