first a few times during WWI, and then widespread during WWII.

Then singing the national anthem at sporting events became widespread, but it has its roots in supporting the military.

Then you add in the NFL and other sports contracts with the armed forces, with the gauche displays of nods to the military in various, obvious ways. It is totally military based now
