tens of thousands of Americans die each year from the flu (including hundreds of children).

Given the similar CFRs (based on the many serology studies showing basically the same thing), that would make a reasonable space alien (with no biases) more concerned about the flu than the coronavirus.

But, there is no political capital in the flu. You can't bail out big corporations and banks because of the flu. Walmart cannot squash all of its competitors because of the flu.
