mutations may make the virus stronger but eventually other mutations will occur that weaken the virus.
There is a very fine line for a virus to be successful. Too powerful and you kill the host before the virus spread. Too weak and the virus cannot take hold.
The virus is not intelligent so if it makes a bad mutation it cannot go back to the previous version. Eventually it will become less effective as we become better at fighting it.
