CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – It’s going to be a great weekend for the family of a St. Louis Police Officer who is recovering from the coronavirus, despite the current health crisis. There was a large celebration at St. Lukes Hospital in Chesterfield as the officer was sent home.
Officer Dave Tenorio was discharged this afternoon from St. Luke’s where had been hospitalized since April first. There was a wonderful show of support from dozens first responders and hospital staff. They clapped and cheered him on as he took a wheelchair out of the hospital.
Then officer Tenorio stood up and walked with the help of a walker. The top commanders of the St. Louis Police Department, including Chief John Hayden, were on hand to greet him. His grateful wife Kathie, who recovered from her own bout with coronavirus, welcomed him with an embrace.
The 55-year-old motorcycle officer entered the hospital very sick man.
“He did need a ventilator, and ultimately ECMO, to get through it. Then today, as you saw while he was little weak, and debilitated from his critical illness. He is much better, and he is on the road to recovery,” said Dr. Jeremy Leidenfrost, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at St. Luke’s Hospital.
St. Luke’s believes he is the first known COVID-19 patient in the St. Louis region to be treated with ECMO and be released home.
ECMO stands for Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation. It is an invasive procedure. Dr. Leidenfrost says officer Tenorio will still be recovering for several months. He expects him to make a full recovery. It will be up to him and his family if he returns to work.
