First, he's basically a legacy due to cousin Jimmy.
Second, Mario is a terrific athlete but has much to improve in his skills, including shooting and playing point. He had to know he was coming in to a loaded group of guards and there would be a learning and adjusting period. He was recruited to be a project and learn from upperclassmen. It didn't work out.
In addition, he was teammates with Fletcher who we were hot and heavy on recruitment. Having Mario on the roster was supposed to help in that regard. I understand that package deals like that rarely work but Mario was worth a scholarship for his potential with the added bonus of his connection to Fletcher.
It didn't work out. However, this time no one in StL can blame Norm! LOL
I could add a story about the time I was in the Hearnes elevator with Coach Irons and his entourage. The door opened at the next floor and there was Norm and Kim waiting to get in the elevator. We went up one floor together in silence. Then as we all walked out of the elevator, Norm turned and simply said "good luck" to Irons, who nodded and walked away.
