I would suggest that most folks do not take into account the impact of attrition when evaluating recruiting classes. It is built into the system, i.e. 25 new scholarships a year, five years in a program with redshirting and only 85 total scholarships in any single year.
Bottom line is a fourth to half of any class of recruits will never contribute. Which recruits fall victim to attrition is a key to how good a class turns out. Unfortunately, it's virtually impossible to predict which kids will be victim of attrition.
One indicators however is the much criticized "star" rankings. The little data available suggests that five star recruits are more likely to be contributors than four star recruits and four stars more likely than three stars. However, the system doesn't do much as far as indicating which of the five or four or three stars are actually going to be players.
