He chose to sign with Missouri — a Southeastern Conference school — after considering other schools including Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Tulsa and Mississippi State. One of the things Smith liked about the Tigers was their family atmosphere.
“Just the team chemistry and the way the coaches meshed with the players,” he said. “They’re all one family and they were trying to make each other better every day, and that’s what I really felt like how it is here for me, so it’s an easier transition to Missouri, how it is here from there.”
Smith said Missouri can either play him at forward or at center, but noted coach Kim Anderson likes what Smith can bring to the table as a forward.
“He said he liked how athletic I was, probably more so as a 4 because I can shoot the ball and I can move a lot better than just a normal post player would, so probably more so as a forward,” Smith said.
“Coach Anderson is a big guy, so he’s going to work with the bigs to make them better. They had a rough year but they’re building and trying to get better players in there so that’s what I want to do; I want to go to a program that’s struggled and we’re trying to make them better and we’re trying to get to the (NCAA) tournament this year and next year.”
