And other people, really.
Details:
1. Sterk didn't "have" to fire Odom. He had the alternative of keeping him on to coach again next year. It was largely his choice as the athletic director to consider the merits of retaining Odom vs. firing him and hiring someone else.
2. When considering that decision, OBVIOUSLY one consideration is, "if not Odom, WHO?" This is much more complicated than looking around and thinking "who doesn't have a job now?" (i.e., Urban Meyer and Bob Stoops, etc.)
3. Given #2, Sterk decided to fire Barry Odom.
NON-DETAILS.
A coach has not been publicly announced, but that doesn't necessarily mean one has not been hired.
Leaks: if something is being leaked, it's generally going to be leaked for a specific reason by a specific person. Could be a coach's agent, could be the athletic department. I'd like to think that journalists don't just make **** up to get clicks, but, hell, you never know about that, too.
The public by and large doesn't know what those making the hiring and those being hired or interviewed know, and likely never will.
Generally speaking, I'd be shocked if Sterk fired Odom without a damn good idea of a short list of candidates to replace him, WITH a good idea of whether they would accept the job or not. This is what agents (and consulting companies) are good for.
Sterk reports "Mizzou has retained the services of a search firm to help with the next head coaching hire."
Who says they weren't retained prior to Odom being fired?
