get the difference . Gov Ashcroft appointed a bunch of curators who supposedly “cared” about the University - they were hell-bent on raising the admission standards and getting rid of any kind of tracks that marginal athletes could survive in. They wanted Mizzou to be “public ivy” with admission standards “Within shouting distance of Harvard“ as then President George Russell put it.
There was even talk of making Mizzou at that time a finishing school only for masters and research and doctoral work which would’ve completely destroyed the entire athletics program. Did they care about the University in terms of academics? That could be argued but it wasn’t until Gov Carnahan appointed Fred Hall and others who specifically went to work on the athletics facilities and admission standards for the athletes that things turned around. Hall cast the deciding vote to fire the Chancellor at that time Charles Kiesler who was part of the public ivy movement and incidentally also deliberately blocking tens of
millions of dollars in facilities improvements and additional special admissions for athletes approved by the curators. You need curators who are specifically focused on improving athletics not just improving the University
