I think it comes down to most of us are happy with our own lives, though uneasy with our view of those lived by the extremes at both ends of society. The vast middleclass majority don't want to see our uniquely American customs and traditions trampled or degraded. We love our freedom and individual liberties and fear adherence to the Constitution and rule of law could be lost in one generation.
On the other side are the extremely rich, the politically powerful, the unalterably helpless poor, the drug and alcohol addled and the mentally ill who populate much of our large cities. This hapless group of societies misfits care nothing for America. They strive to undermine our liberty and rule of law. They contribute little to our economy, but effort to profit off the industry of others. The elite even favor replacing normal Americans with a flood of third world immigrants who have no hope of assimilation into normal Americans.
One side loves America and hope to save it, while the other fully intends to destroy it.
