Don't equate Missouri with the south in that regard....

Missouri never joined the Confederacy, never seceded from the Union, and the majority of Missourian soldiers fought for the Union to help free the slaves. Missouri was one of the 5 "border states" along with Maryland and Delaware. All in all, Missouri was on the better side of history.
However, Virginia (home of the current national champ) and North Carolina (home of blue-bloods UNC and Duke)... now THOSE were some evil confederate slave states, yet their schools don't have a problem with recruiting in the slightest. In fact, they dominate on the recruiting trail.
So Missouri's problems have nothing to do with what you suggested. 3 of our last 4 head coaches have been black, and on top of that our current HC is from STL.
