Caliph Uthman ordered all copies of the Quran except the version he authorized to be burned.

This led to his assassination under claims by Muhammed's son-in-law Ali that Uthman had altered the text to rob Ali of his claim to leadership of Islam.

Some pre-Uthman manuscripts still exist to support the claim of Uthman's alterations. These alterations help lead to the Shia-Sunni split.
