Why is Hong Kong so important?

At one time, we assisted/supported out of allegiance to Great Britain and their economic interests. Another period it was because HK was this bastion of democracy on China's doorstep and a place that we could exploit to poke the bear a bit. But they've announced a reunification plan for 2047, so we've given up on that concept and China has opened up a bit. Why do we care how they handle their internal squabbles? I mean, from a humanitarian standpoint, sure, but how is that any different than how Germany handled its immigrant crisis or how we're handling ours?
