Legan was allegedly interested in literature that has been associated with white supremacist, misogynistic, and anti-Semitic views. Another post on Legan's since-deleted Instagram account said, "Read Might Is Right by Ragnar Redbeard. Why overcrowd towns and pave more open space to make room for hordes of mestizos and Silicon Valley white ****s?" Might is Right, first published in 1890, advocates strongly for egoist anarchism.
The book also insinuates that weakness should be treated with hatred and that women and children are the property of the male head of the household. Some scholars have regarded the book as a satire of Social Darwinism but others consider the book to be a manifesto for white supremacy.
Legan was the grandson of Tom Legan, a former county supervisor and graduate of West Point University. The elder Legan, a veteran of the Korean War, was accused of sexually assaulting his daughter in 1988 but was acquitted on all charges.
