My dad died Wednesday morning. He was a lifelong fan of the Fighting Irish (Class of 1960) and he taught me to love college football. He attended nearly 400 Notre Dame games, and he brought me along for some of them, including Joe Montana’s “Chicken Soup”game at the Cotton Bowl, the original “Green Jersey” game in 1977, and, more recently, the Bush Push game in 2005.
When I enrolled at Mizzou, the Tigers became his second team. He followed them as best he could, but I suspect he was quite happy when Brad Burnett’s field goal fell inexplicably short. Year’s before that, I was supposed to go with him to the famous 3-0 game, but something disrupted my plans. He said that was one of the hottest games he’d ever attended.
He absolutely loved college football and everything surrounding it. In 1997, he came down to Mizzou for the Nebraska game and enjoyed all of it, except the last play of regulation.
I will miss him and the Saturday afternoon discussions. Because of him, I will always pull for the Irish...unless they play my Tigers.
