Missouri's request that center Uche Okafor be reinstated after being suspended for signing with a Russian semipro team was denied by the NCAA. Okafor has no further possible appeals of the NCAA reinstatement committee's decision to reject his eligibility.
Okafor was suspended indefinitely when the NCAA said he violated amateur rules by being on the roster of a Russian club. Team Dynamo, which signed Okafor to a contract and paid travel and living expenses for him to come to Moscow, is defunct. Okafor never played a game for the team.
"I believe that the assertion that he had intent to professionalize is an inaccurate portrayal of his situation," Tigers coach Quin Snyder said after Tuesday's ruling, adding that "disappointed hardly describes my feelings for the situation."
"Uche deserves to play collegiate basketball, regardless of whether at Missouri or elsewhere," Snyder said. "We've had our day in court, so to speak, and it didn't go our way. We will continue to give Uche our support and let him know that he's part of our family."
