There is too much political capital to be gained with the base by dragging this out. They know it will not end well for them so they don't want to end it.
Have you ever caught a toddler red-handed doing something they knew was wrong? They will do anything in their power to keep from admitting it because they know at the end of the conversation there is a punishment waiting.
