Note: this is entirely a work of fiction. Any resemblance to people living or dead is entirely obvious.

Plot
Four St Louis men—JG, the shoe, Toro and Uncle Fester—decide to canoe down a river in the remote Missouri wilderness, expecting to have fun and witness the area's unspoiled nature before the Meramec River valley is flooded by construction of a dam. JG and Uncle Fester are experienced outdoorsmen, while Toro and the shoe are novices. While traveling to their launch site, the men (Toro in particular) are condescending towards the locals, who are unimpressed by the "city boys."

Traveling in pairs, the group's two canoes are briefly separated. the shoe and Toro stop along the riverbank and soon encounter a pair of local mountain men with a shotgun, who force them at gunpoint into the woods. They tie the shoe to a tree and order Toro to strip naked; one of the mountain men sodomizes him, telling him to "squeal like a pig." As they prepare to sexually assault the shoe, JG and Uncle Fester arrive, unseen by the mountain men. Using his recurve bow, Uncle Fester kills the rapist with an arrow. JG gives chase to the other man; however he escapes. After a heated debate between JG and the shoe about whether or not to inform the authorities, Toro and the Uncle Fester vote to side with JG in his recommendation to bury the dead man's body and continue on as if nothing had happened.

The four continue downriver but encounter a dangerous stretch of rapids, during which the shoe , seemingly dazed, suddenly falls into the water and disappears. In the rapids, the canoes crash into rocks, leaving one canoe destroyed and JG suffering a severe compound fracture to his leg. Encouraged by JG, who believes the shoe was shot by the rapist's partner, Uncle Fester climbs up the rock face with the bow while Toro stays behind to look after JG. Reaching the top of the cliff, Uncle Fester hides out until the next morning when a hunter appears who Uncle Fester believes is the toothless mountain man. Frantic, Uncle Fester clumsily shoots and kills the man, while accidentally stabbing himself with one of the spare arrows. Uncle Fester lowers down the man's body to Toro and the two weigh down the body in the river to ensure it will never be found. They later find the shoe's body downriver and decide to weigh it down and sink it as well.

Upon finally reaching their destination in the small town of Twin Springs, they take JG to the hospital. Uncle Fester and Toro carefully concoct a cover story for the authorities about the shoe's death and disappearance being an accident, lying about their ordeal to Sheriff Nick in order to escape a possible double-murder charge. The sheriff clearly does not believe them, but has no evidence to arrest them and simply tells the men never to come back, to which they agree. The trio vow to keep their story of death and survival a secret for the rest of their lives.

After their ordeal, Uncle Fester awakens, startled by a nightmare in which a bloated human hand rises from the lake.

The competition for banjo boy, the rapist and toothless was fearce. Interesting sidebar about Billy Redden, he went on to play a banjo playing yahoo in several other films as an adult- but he can't play the banjo.
