QB is the hardest part of the equation. I don't disagree with your sentiment that we wasted a year. However, I doubt even Reid thought that the transition of PMII would be that amazing. I think they had a plan of surrounding PMII with talent to make life smooth for him, then drafting talent for the 4-3 last year, without jettisoning their best 3-4 players, before making a scheme switch and a run in 2019 / 20.
Hill would be a huge loss, but I don't share your pessimism that last season was our one shot if KC moves forward without him. KC has freed themselves from some bad contracts this year on defense. I think that elite 3-4 d-line and LB's are harder to find. I like the idea of having a more balanced and cheaper front 7 (with Jones as the outlier) and focusing more on drafting secondary and LB's. LB's, relatively speaking, drafted in the first 3 rounds, have a high percentage of making it as a starter. DB's aren't as high a percentage in round 1, relatively speaking, but they are a strong choice in the second, and a strong choice in the later rounds. I think Spags scheme should allow KC to quickly transition to a better defense this year and to a middle of the pack defense or better by the following. Like you said, Sutton needed to go.
