the South would never go along with direct election of the president, because the slaves could not vote. Population was used to determine the number of electors of each state. The electors would then elect the president.
Another large reason that electors were used was that the founders didn't ever conceive of people all over the country
(and this was even before the Louisiana Purchase) being able to get enough information about candidates to be able to make an informed vote, so the electors chose the president instead. Clearly that reason for using electors has been rendered irrelevant today.
There is no fair reason for keeping the electoral college.
