A University of Tulsa season that once showed potential for a return to the NCAA Tournament instead ended as early as possible.
The Hurricane was sent packing from the first round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament with a frustrating 74-65 loss to SMU on Thursday night, sealing the fate of a third consecutive year without a postseason appearance.
Playing at a mostly empty FedExForum, TU (18-14) fell behind by 20 points before attempting to mount a furious comeback, pulling within six in the final three minutes but ultimately running out of gas.
“I thought we were pressing,” TU coach Frank Haith said. “We were trying so hard and we had some really good looks. It just didn’t go. And we were getting stops. I think we stopped their first five or six possessions. If we could have scored a little bit, it would have made it interesting.”
