“I don’t know why they wouldn’t (buy in),” he said. “It’s what you do. You’re on scholarship. You’re part of the program. It’s what you’re supposed to do. Or you’ve got to find a new program. I’ve never been one to judge or gauge whether or not they’re buying in. If you’re not buying in, you have to relocate. I don’t understand that. I really don’t. This is what you’re supposed to do. Give everything you’ve got. You’re on scholarship. Somebody’s paying for your school. That’s the least you can do is play hard.”
“You’ve got to embrace challenges,” he added. “I look in some guys’ eyes. I’ll just put it like that. Your eyes tell me if you’re ready to play. I see the same thing in Javon and Ronnie’s eyes all the time.”
Expect Martin to use more of the four-guard look the rest of the season.
“We will,” Martin said. “Good or bad I try to go with guys giving us the best chance possible. Sometimes when you’re an older guy you’ve been in the program, you’ve given every opportunity … but at some point you got to do what’s best for the program.”
On Suggs:
“Ronnie’s issue before is Ronnie believing in Ronnie,” Martin said. “It wasn’t a question of if he could play. He showcased that tonight. You’re talking about a guy who’s really a scholarship athlete.”
On Mark Smith:
“You can see how he’s moving out there,” Martin said. “Credit to the guy who wants to be part of his team and help his team win a game. You can see he’s got probably two inches of tape on his ankle. It’s what it is. I applaud and respect that.”
Suggs on Cuonzo's halftime speech:
“He wasn’t yelling or anything,” junior guard Ronnie Suggs said. “He was telling us straight how it is. We weren’t playing hard. We weren’t giving effort. We weren’t being physical. They had a lot of offensive rebounds on us that we should have been blocking out. He said until we’re aggressive we’re not going to win this game.”
Tilmon on his teammates:
“I was talking to them the whole time like, 'Front him, front him, front him, I'm behind you,’” Tilmon said. “I wasn't really there to help them first half, but more the second half, I was making sure to be vocal, let them know where I was at. Whenever (Washington) got the ball, I would leave my man to go trap him because that's who was eating on the team. We had to cut the head off of him.”
Martin “knows Ronnie and Javon some dogs,” Tilmon added. “He knows they'll go hard no matter who they're going against. I know Javon will play hard no matter who it is. Every time we play a good team, he's going to be the hardest playing player on the team. So I mean, it's just pride. They got heart."
