Dear Tiger Fans:

Thank you for your incredible and generous support of our 550 student-athletes who proudly wear Mizzou’s Black & Gold!

Two weeks ago today, Mizzou Athletics received shocking news from the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions that imposed overly harsh penalties on our football, baseball and softball programs that were neither expected nor appropriate, especially given that we had been cited for exemplary cooperation by the NCAA Enforcement staff during the process.

The University filed its Notice of Appeal with the NCAA late yesterday, and once we receive acknowledgement, we will then have 30 days to file our written appeal. We will appeal all of the penalties handed down, except the vacated wins and a one-year term of probation, which are standard penalties in cases like this.

President Choi, Chancellor Cartwright and the Board of Curators met last Thursday along with University General Council, Michael Glazier and myself. In short, we discussed the case, action taken by the COI, our legal strategy and team moving forward and equally important, our strategic communication team and strategy.

Our legal team for the appeal will be headed by Bond, Schoeneck & King’s Mike Glazier, who has been with Mizzou since the start of this case in the fall of 2016 and is regarded as the nation’s best attorney when it comes to NCAA infractions cases. Mizzou will also be working with other legal advisors through the appeals process.

This past Sunday, we launched a web page dedicated to the case and that is designed to keep everyone updated on the appeals process. Our goal is to “Educate, Unify and Engage” Mizzou’s constituents, media and other interested parties on our case.

Please know that this will be a proactive battle that will not be overly aggressive or hostile. We need to strike a balance in our approach, otherwise it could be detrimental to the outcome of our appeal. Because our appeal will likely be decided somewhere between six months and a year from now, our strategy needs to fit a marathon not a sprint.

I know you are “all in” with Mizzou Athletics, so when someone asks you how they can help our efforts, please tell them to:

1. Use the hashtag #MakeItRight on social media. Mizzou Athletics’ motto is to “WinItRight” and our 20 varsity programs have embodied that. #MakeItRight is an extension of the #WinItRight ideal, and Mizzou’s leadership will continue to fight for what is right for its current student-athletes and coaches, who had nothing to do with the actions of a sole individual. As the national media continues to publish articles and tweet about this case, it is important that Mizzou fans share those articles and social media posts with the #MakeItRight hashtag.

2. Attend Mizzou Athletic events, specifically in the three sports that are affected by the ruling – baseball, football and softball. The penalties levied by the NCAA’s COI have negatively impacted the lives and athletic careers for Mizzou’s student-athletes from those three programs, despite the fact that none of our current athletes or coaches had anything to do with the charges. Mizzou fans need to rally behind these unfair penalties given to student-athletes and coaches who have done nothing but #WinItRight during their time in Black & Gold. Let’s pack Memorial Stadium with 65,000 fans for all seven home games this fall, let’s make the Mizzou Softball Stadium and Taylor Stadium an unforgettable atmosphere for our baseball and softball teams. It’s the support from Mizzou nation in this trying time that our student-athletes will remember as they charge forward in these challenging times. They need you now more than ever.

3. Support Mizzou’s Tiger Scholarship Fund: Join Mizzou’s athletic leaders in their fight by supporting and investing in the lives of Mizzou’s student-athletes by donating to the Tiger Scholarship Fund. Every donation can signify a unified response from the entire state. If you’re not currently contributing, please give something. If you’re already contributing, please consider giving more and encourage your family and friends to do the same. Call (573)-882-0704 or visit www.TSFMizzou.com to donate today.

4. Call Your State Representatives: Since the initial ruling came out last month, legislators from across the state and who serve us in Washington D.C., have voiced their displeasure. Missouri State Senator Caleb Rowden has filed a Senate remonstrance in reaction to the COI’s decision. Mizzou fans can continue to call and e-mail state and federal legislators as they help us take a stand against these penalties.

I deeply appreciate the tremendous outpouring of support our student-athletes, coaches, staff and Mizzou have received over the last two weeks. Now is the time to mobilize all alums, anyone that cares about Mizzou, as well as every college sports fan, in our fight to overturn these overly harsh penalties.

Thank you for your amazing and dedicated support for Mizzou! Let’s #WinItRight #MakeItRight for Mizzou!

M-I-Z,

Jim Sterk
