at Oakland Army Base --now gone but where everyone processed over seas to and from then. Got out at noon (It was Sat Jan 13 then)---and was heading back to Columbia for grad school. Registered for classes Mon Jan 15 and was at Harpo's that night having a beer or two .Culture shock but good kind.
It was great to be home and back at Mizzou. Beat the hell out of the Central Highlands. The war was winding down and as Bob Hope had said in Christmas 1972 show he was playing for the leftovers by then. Less than 30,000 of us in country by then. Watched the fall of Saigon a little over two years later--again from Harpo's but you knew if was coming
One of the last of the draftees but the Army tried to call be back to active duty two years later while at Mizzou and I refused saying I was in school and to take someone else. They had never even assigned me to a reserve unit . After a few back and forth letters they said never mind. Guess they didn't need me after all
