I support erecting a physical barrier along key portions of the border with Mexico. First, it seems only common sense that a sovereign nation requires a secure border, and it is equally clear that the USA does not have a secure southern border. Second, the cost of the wall is far less than the cost of the illegal immigration that is made possible by the lack of a secure southern border and sensible immigration policies and law. The cost of the wall has been described as being $5 to 6 billion, while the annual cost of illegal immigration is much greater. The report entitled The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on United States Taxpayers (Federation for American Immigration Reform, September 2017) estimated the net cost to American taxpayers at $116 billion per year. I know this value has been criticized as inaccurate, but my understanding is that one of the primary facts underlying that criticism is that there is significant uncertainty on the actual number of illegal immigrations, which merely serves to underscore the extent to which the southern border is insecure and illegal immigration is out of control.
