It is a last, but very faulty, check against the rise of a popular tyrant.
Going to a national popular vote system and that hope is gone.
That strikes at the heart of the problem. The Presidency is now too powerful of an office. 1/3 of the government, including the military, law enforcement and intelligence agencies are under the control of one person.
The Presidency under the Articles of Confederation did not grant that office much power at all.
