The electoral college has one purpose in 2019. It's purpose is to give Republicans a chance to win the Presidency. Without the electoral college, Bush I would be the last Republican President.
That's why Democrats would like to get rid of it and Republicans want to keep it.
The Republican party is dying. Literally. It's supporters are older and white and younger voters are more Democratic. People of color are more Democratic. The Republican party is losing a war of attrition and they know it.
Besides the electoral college, gerrymandering, voter suppression, and judicial appointments are tools used by the dying Republican party to attempt to maintain some vestige of control as the Democratic majority continues to grow.
