After avging 17.7 points and 3.3 assists for Penn High in Mishawaka, Ind he had scholarship offers from Wright State, Ball State and Wisconsin-Green Bay. For non-academic reasons he decided to attend Ranger Community College because he felt that was his best basketball opportunity since Billy Gilespie coached there.

But he said he failed to pick up offers from any major Division I programs. As a result, Geist decided to spend a year playing at Ranger.
"My family and I thought it would be best if I went to junior college for a year and tried to get a little more exposure," he said.
At Ranger, Geist got the opportunity to play for coach Billie Gillispie, a former coach at Texas A&M and Kentucky. Both Geist and Gillispie went into this past season with the goal of getting Geist onto a Division I roster. Geist spent most of the season as a shooting guard.Despite his unusual path, Geist believes his experience made him a viable option for Missouri.
"I got to play against some great competition last year," Geist said. "This summer, I'll have a good chance to get a feel for the other guys. Hopefully I can get that starting spot and make something special of it."
After a season where he avged 15.1 points, shot 35.3 percent from three-point range and also averaged 3.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals he signed with MU.
"The atmosphere and culture surrounding Mizzou's program is very exciting to me," Geist said. "The campus is beautiful and the basketball arena is second-to-none. Coach Anderson and his staff treated me so well on my visit. That made me excited to be a part of the program. Playing in a great conference was also important to me. The SEC has great competition and has tough programs to play against. And I'll be getting great coaching from the Mizzou coaches. I know they'll prepare us the right way."
In any normal era of MU basketball that is a walkon. I don't even know that MU even beat out any competitors for his service, not sure anyone else was recruiting him. He visited Columbia in April 2016 and committed that weekend. I'm not talking about his ability to contribute, I'm talking about his path to MU. Normally he is a guy who would walk on to our program.
