Great win, that was a quality opponent who was likely more talented than us and we just persisted and eventually got the win. That will end up really helping our metrics because that team will win a lot of games.
BJ Talyor is a good player, and defensively we really neutralized him. Credit goes to Geist mostly on that. Since Wes Clark left, I think that was about our first game were opposition dribble penetration wasn't a huge issue but our backcourt mostly kept guys out of the lane and stayed in front. And that is really what forced Taylor into a frustrating night of 2-10 shooting.
That game was won on the offensive glass for MU, just great effort is what allowed us to stay in the game.
MU now has 6 fast break points in the last 3 games total, with zero coming last night. With a team this offensively challenged we have to find a way to get some transition points. Also only managed 7 assists.
Makes a huge difference having Tilmon in the game in the second half, that changes the complexion of everything we do. And it was great to see him get used as a center predominantly so he could be effective. I can’t think of one time I’ve ever seem him knock down a jumper as defenses collapse on the ball handler on a pick and roll, and I can’t think of one time I’ve ever seen him cut down the lane and finish on the receiving end. But I can think of about 50 times he has picked up fouls setting high picks for guys who can’t get to the rim anyway. He should never leave an area of about 7 feet from the basket. Great footwork this game to simply outmaneuver Fall.
Pictett has been such a huge addition, and he looks completely comfortable and poised playing the role he has been given.
Defensively we did a great job of preventing lobs off rotations to Fall, he really wasn’t much of a factor and our discipline was a main reason.
While not an official stat, I believe Puryear became MU’s all time leader in having his shot blocked last night. I’m sure he will end up leading by a large margin over whomoever is #2.
Kind of funny seeing the Hollinder drawing up end of game plays….which then resulted in us not even being able to inbound the ball, and then next Geist being left at the top of the key with no ball movement and him having to bail us out with a circus shot. Maybe not the end of game specialist they lauded on the broadcast.
Watson may as well be a walkon.
Geist was the only player who could have taken that last shot. Really wish we would move him off the ball, if we relieved him of his ball handling duties our offense would be a lot more effective.
