It's called deductive reasoning, happens in court all the time to establish motive. So if a guy says he stole some money to pay for his mother's operation, and then you find out his mother died 10 years ago and he bought a prostitute with the money, you can then say he did in fact not steal the money for his mother's operation.

Now if you don't want to see the truth, then that's different...
