Basketball is becoming more and more of a perimeter game and it is really hard to learn to be a perimeter player in HS or College. It is a lot easier to learn post moves and inside play when you're older. In fact, a lot of big guys don't learn that stuff until they are older because they simply get by on size when they're in youth league or jr high, or even HS...See Rosburg.
So...not every kid that is the tallest on the team in 5th grade or even jr high is the tallest kid on Varsity or College. If they have not learned any perimeter skills by that point, their career is usually over.
Any tall kid who is smart, or has a smart coach/dad, will learn to play some perimeter in their youth. Yes, it might make some of them soft, but they were probably soft anyway.
