premier Olympic hurdler/speedster back in the early 80s. The 49ers brought him in to stretch the field the help open up the offense for Bill Walsh’s offense. Obviously, there’s more to being an NFL receiver than blowing off the line & getting past a defender. Running pristine routes doesn’t just happen after film study. The best have been doing it for a number of years at every level by the time they reach the NFL.
Similarly, the difference between a FR/SO receiver & an All-SEC Senior is monumental. Look at how we struggled when Hall went out of the Purdue game (& ever since). Remember when he hit the bullet for the winning catch in the 4th quarter? Like taking candy from a baby. Kudos to him for sucking it up (which still amazes me considering the time he’s missed since). He looked like a pro after seeing what we were doing until then (after the injury).
Don’t be surprised if he’s able to come back 90% of what he was before the injury & suddenly, our offense looks like it’s humming along. Naysayers will find every reason to diminish any improvement but we’ll see a noticeable jump if he comes back at that level. He’s the definition of a game-changer. Wish we had him back Saturday but I certainly understand. As much as we want a win, he’s dealing with something far more important.
