The last very good coach we hired was Gary Pinkel. The last great coach we hired was Dan Devine(92-38-7). Now, the rest:
Al Onofrio: Great defensive coach. Not exactly a super motivator. His teams overachieved against the top teams in the land, yet underachieved against the likes of Illinois, Baylor and other lower echelon teams. Recruited some great players, especially running backs (Wilder, Curtis Brown, Earl Gant, et al). Uncle Al started with an abysmal 1-10 record his first year (with practically no offensive talent whatsoever) and then went 6-6 and 8-4 the next two years. His inability to beat kU sealed his fate, especially with KC alumni.
Warren Powers: A pretty good coach with the talent he inherited, but apparently liked to party more than coach at times. Not exactly a proven entity, with only one year of head coaching experience (6-5) as Washington State before coming to Mizzou. The last Mizzou coach to beat the Nubs before Pinkel did it in 2003. Never coached again after leaving MU.
Woody: What can you say about that abortion of a hire? No college head coaching experience. Record at Mizzou: 12-31-1. After leaving Mizzou, Vanderbilt was dumb enough to hire him and he went 15-40 there. The last I heard he was manning a toll booth on the Florida turnpike.
Stull: Almost as bad as Woody, with a 15-38-2 record at Mizzou. Previous head coaching jobs were at powerhouses UMass and UTEP. Mizzou was his last head coaching job.
Larry Smith: Great at turnarounds, but lousy at sustaining success. Engineered nice turnarounds at Tulane, Arizona and USC, but the house came crashing down in his last two years at SC, when his teams went 3-8 and 6-5-1 after averaging 9 wins in his first three seasons. Turned Mizzou around for two years, then stopped recruiting (according to Mike Kelly) and the rest is history. Mizzou was his last coaching job.
Gary Pinkel: A proven head coach at Toledo who brought practically his entire coaching staff with him. Learned from one of the great coaches in college football history, Don James at Washington. Record at Mizzou: 118-73.
Which brings us to Barry Odom. No college head coaching experience. Six years as an assistant coach at Memphis and Missouri. Promoted to head coach by one of the worst ADs in Mizzou history. 14-17 overall record with a 6-13 conference record. A history of bad hires/promotions when it comes to assistant coaches. A mediocre recruiter at best. And if he gets cut loose by Mizzou, I doubt he'll find another Power 5 head coaching gig anytime soon.
If Sterk is half the AD he's supposed to be, I'm really hoping he hires a winner as our next head coach.
