McCain opposed Trump's efforts to win the GOP nomination. After it became obvious that Trump would be the candidate, an uneasy truce was reached (or perhaps more precisely, McCain accepted the inevitable).
If memory serves, McCain's father and grandfather were Navy Admirals. McCain grew up in the Washington DC area.
Following Vietnam, McCain served as a liaison for the Navy with Congress. Each military branch has Pentagon offices that do nothing by interact with House and Senate members.
Again, if memory serves, McCain met his wife at that time and McCain came to Arizona in the early 1980's. Cindy McCain's family are long time Arizona residents owned (and to my knowledge still own) the Budweiser distributorship for the Phoenix metro area.
McCain had two careers, the first was as a Navy officer, the second as an elected politician. Shortly after he moved to Arizona, John Rhoades, a long standing GOP congressman and one-time House Speaker, retired and McCain ran for and was elected to Rhoades' house seat. McCain served several terms in the House before running for and becoming a fixture the Senate.
It would be an understatement to say that McCain and Trump had/have very different attitudes toward the Federal Government and its proper role in American society.
