Missouri is an awesome state to grow up, lead a good life and raise kids. But we're just nooooot quite successful/smart/cultured/whatever enough to crack the popular kids clique. So the folks who want so very badly to be inside that clique develop this odd hedge against the crushing disappointment of not being in the club.
Some people develop a kind of armor that says The Club Doesn't Matter. That's probably my leaning.
Some people develop a kind of armor that says The Club is all that matters and we will never be in it so I'm no longer associating with the "we", who are losers anyway.
