Yankees & the Yankees don’t have to do that, unless they see leverage & a better deal for themselves for whatever reason.
They can rent him & then resign him in free agency.
My understanding is he wants to be a Yankee, but I agree if the Cardinals can get (& they can certainly be one of the most competitive from players/prospects to get a deal done) the assurance (sign & trade) he will be Cardinal going forward after this season.
Orioles have all the leverage in that deal. More so now than they did in the offseason. It will take a lot!
