Donald Trump Jr met with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya during the election, in an attempt at getting dirt from her about Hillary Clinton. When the media got wind of this meeting a year later, Junior first tried to claim the meeting was about adoption, before his own emails made clear that his intent was criminal in nature. His last line of partial defense was the claim that Veselnitskaya wasn’t really representing the Russian government, and therefore he was only conspiring against United States with a Russian private citizen, and not with the Russian government itself.
