would be foolish not to hire attorneys.
If they caught him lying and had irrefutable proof he would have ZERO negotiating power. His only hope is to minimize the penalty, and his only bargaining chip is to cooperate.
As experienced attorneys have noted, getting him to plead guilty to lying is evidence that they have nothing else against him. If they did, they would go for some other plea as that one taints any evidence he could give them against anyone else. Juries aren't prone to believe witnesses that are convicted of lying, especially when they know that what he says will affect his prison sentence.
