A regular redshirt is used when a player has not played in a given season and when he still has eligibility remaining.

A medical redshirt is used when a player has already played a little then has a season-ending injury.

A school can also apply for a medical hardship waiver if a player has already missed a season because of injury and misses another year. This results in a sixth year of eligibility.
