as of today, as conference tourneys start, here is how the 9 teams fighting for the last 5 national seeds compare on some key numbers.
Current RPI, overall SOS/non conference SOS:
Ohio State: 6, 7/9
Duke 12, 23/54
Stanford 15, 6/4
Missouri: 18, 37/74
TAMU: 19, 11/25
Maryland: 20, 52/140
NC State: 21, 30/86
Georgia: 28, 79/119
Oregon State: 32. 98/247
8 of these teams have either 2 or 3 top 25 RPI wins, only NC State has only 1. Everyone, Mizzou included, could stand to pick up at least one more top 25 win in their conference tourney. Georgia though is sitting outside the top 25 today at #28; but is still crucial for us.
Georgia's worst loss all year was to #25 LSU. Ours was to #41 Western Kentucky. Only Stanford and Duke had a really bad loss to a team with a 100+ RPI, to 100 WIU, and 110 North Carolina, respectively.
Besides Ohio State at 6 and Georgia and Oregon State at 28 and 32, all the others are bunched pretty close together in RPI rank.
On the non conference SOS, which the committee looks hard at, we are pretty similar to Duke and NC State, we are far worse than Stanford, Ohio State and TAMU, and far better than Georgia, Maryland, and Oregon State. Considering their past behavior, it's hard for me to see the selection committee give a top 16 seed to an Oregon State with a horrid NC SOS ranking of 247.
Right now the critical criteria as a whole seem to have us favored over Georgia, Maryland and Oregon State, have us very close to Duke and NC State, and have us comparing unfavorably to Ohio State, Stanford and TAMU. We need to beat out 4 of the other 8 teams in the eyes of the selection committee to get a top 16 seed and home regional. I think we would have locked one up already by now had we beaten either Miss State or TAMU.
Now all we have to do is go out and win. I think we could lose to Georgia and still barely get in, if enough of the other contenders also fail to do anything in their tournaments. But I'd rather not test that theory. Better to just go whip the Dawgs and take all the drama out of it.
