tournament. It could be a big factor in our seeding situation.
Ohio State and Maryland are the marquee teams in the conference this year and favored to meet in the finals. They are ranked 13 and 17 in the new AP poll out today, and have RPI ranks of 6 and 20 today. In the selection committee reveal a week ago, they were #13 and #14 overall, the two highest 4 seeds. So they are our direct competitors for one of the last 5 national seeds I think are still available.
Which means we need one or both of them to lose, and not make the finals of the B1G tournament. The B1G is strange this year, only 2 teams ranked in the top 25 now, but Iowa and Michigan are just outside of it. ESPN has 7 teams in the NCAAs, but 3 of them are projected among the last 4 teams in: Minnesota, Rutgers, and Purdue. Nebraska is in the first 4 teams out. And Michigan State and Indiana are in the next 4 teams out. So basically 10 teams considered NCAA worthy, but most of them bunched towards the bottom of the field or just missing it.
Which all means that Ohio State and Maryland will play nothing but good, but not great, teams capable of beating them. Ohio State faces Purdue or Rutgers in the quarters, both are capable of beating them. Then they play either Minnesota or Iowa in the semis, same thing. Maryland has even a tougher road I think with probably MSU in the quarters and then Michigan or Nebraska in the semis. Michigan has already beaten the Terps and Nebraska nearly beat them at home Sunday.
I think we are in if we beat Georgia in the quarters. But it will help us if teams like Ohio State, Maryland, NC State, Duke, Stanford , Oregon State and TAMU have poor conference tournaments.
