BS. Total BS.
Coaching a game is a mind game and strategy against the other coach. All about adjustments. A coach has a few seconds to make crucial decisions.
Man vs zone when needed and switching from one to the other when needed.
Adjustments to ball screens. Switch or not? Go over or under screens on certain players
Which zone if we switch to zone?
How are we playing man?Sag? Pressure? deny?
Is our best player better suited gauarding someone other than their best to stay out of foul trouble? He’s got one foul early. Do we switch him to another or trust him to not pick up his second in the next 6 minutes?
Do we spell our stud when their stud is out?
Are we going right at their rim protector to get them that 2nd early foul or taking advantage of slow close outs on the skip or kick out?
Are we looking for an open three on this inbound play or are we screening for a lob?
Do we speed them up with some full court pressure or slow it down?
What pace seems to be working in our favor right now?
Substitution.
Trust.
Just a few examples, but I could go on and on and on.
I’m not saying the other things you listed aren’t important. You make some good points but to discount the actual game coaching itself is beyond absurd. It’s so crucial and it’s one of my favorite feelings in life. I’ve enjoyed coaching so much more than I ever enjoyed playing because ultimately it’s all on my decision making and the pressure that comes with it is a rush. The kids completely depend on it 90% of the game.
