demonstrating what was widely recognized as crappy flying skills & judgment, but mostly ignored because of who his father was.
He crashed one in Corpus Christi Bay practicing landings & blaming engine failure, even though the Navy never found any evidence of that & Naval investigators concluded the young pilot wasn’t paying attention & used a power setting too low to maintain level flight in a turn.
He crashed another by “clowning around” & getting it tangled in Electric lines & causing a black out in Spain.
After getting sent to Vietnam, his plane was destroyed in an explosion on the deck of an aircraft carrier which resulted in a fire on the USS Forrestal that killed 132 sailors & permanently disabled 161 more.
Again, due to his father, this was all covered up & it’s hard to determine today how much fault he may have been for causing it. Whether he “wet started” his jet by sending more jet fuel to his engines for a “showy” start on the deck or accidently fired a missle while still on deck.
To be fair, there have been claims it was another plane on the deck that accidently fired a missle that hit either McCain’s plane or one next to him. Still, given his previous wreckless & incompetent incidents, who knows.
He then was shot down over Vietnam & taken prisoner.
Guess you can write it off to McCain getting an early start on wasting mountains of taxpayer’s money.
