ready to play after a big break. He has started two seasons slowly and failed to have the prepared after a month bowl break.
*I didn't wan to hire Odom. Said it was a mistake.
*Acknowledge that he did a pretty good job of hiring his assistants. Missed a couple, but hit on several.
*Mid-season, thought he would eventually be better than what we'd seen, but agreed that he was likely on track to be fired.
*Enjoyed watching the season turn around from epic failure to one of basic achievement. Not overachievement, but improving to average.
*Acknowledge that the extension was necessary, but glad there was no raise. Bump is bonus potential is a good thing.
Now, having covered my basic opinions of him, I will point out the obvious. Barry Odom is not the brightest coach out there. Good man. Has a passion for the job and the school. But he is a rah rah type of coach and not going to outwit the big guys. To be fair, there are lots of others like him. Some of them just look better because of recruiting advantages, or recruiting prowess, or recruiting payoffs...whatever.
A huge part of our run this year, was simply momentum. Yes, SoS and all plays a factor. But we got hot, and it's hard to stop a train. Time off prior to a bowl, stole all of that. Obviously Huepel leaving was also a big factor, and JJF was nowhere remotely prepared to put together a gameplan or call plays...which is why I wanted Hill to do it. Simply more experienced.
If we start slow next year, we'll be 2-4 and in serious danger of 2-7. And that is with Lock.
We can not take the month of September to figure shlt out. Issues like Lee/Prewitt and Prewitt/Ulmer, Cheadle/Sparks and Hall at WR must be figured out in camp.
If Lock leaves, it's going to be tough. We must find a way to be a run, run, run team with some good backs. Maybe Wilson plays as a runner, but I wouldn't count out Powell being a better passer.
If Lock is back, and you don't expect this team to win at least 8 games, you're being too soft on them.
Regardless of the QB situation, if we start 2-7, I will not complain if Odom is fired before the season is over. I generally don't agree with that strategy, but it will be clear that it's over.
