There is no in between. You can't have him going into the final year of his deal as a lame duck. You can't recruit like that.
With six straight wins, he earned a chance to stick around. If next year goes south, you fire him and move on.
If Lock somehow stays, the D will be better next year, cross your fingers and hope.
