Ben Bradlee could hate Richard Nixon more than just about any man could hate another (which Bradlee did) and have a fawning group of like minded media elites follow along in stride, singing from the same hymnal as they all got on Nixon's trail.
Nixon was a horrible man, no doubt, who not only wanted to win but crush his opponents along the way. That made him exactly like Lyndon Johnson and Bradlee's best pal JFK. He just was on the wrong team for the media of the day. Plus, he wasn't cool or part of the in crowd of elites.
Nixon too, in spite of winning the Presidency, was never part of the Club. Same as Trump.
