It reminds me of when Clinton was running for a 2nd term.

He had ticked off much of his base by pushing for NAFTA, 3 strikes and you're out type of sentencing reform, and had fired missiles into more countries than any president in history despite his anti-war campaign promises. He was also mired in one scandal after another and his approval rating had been going downhill for a long time and was at or near historical lows. Things did not look good for him at all.
Among the scandals hitting the news was his "renting out of White House rooms" to guests who would make big campaign contributions, the illegal practice of having government workers making calls and doing other free campaign work for him, and, of course, Al Gore's Temple of Cash illegal tapping of the Chinese for cash for his campaign.
He put his ill gotten gains to work, though. I didn't watch much TV even back then, but saw some ads during a family function. It seemed like every time I walked through the room with the TV on there was a Clinton ad running. I busted out laughing at the first one I saw because it sounded so absurd. It was along the lines of "The Republicans hate working people. They hate old people and are going to have them thrown out of their homes and put them out on the street... they're going to..." It seemed like about the only thing they didn't accuse them of in the 30 second commercial was wanting to kill your dog. I thought who in the world would believe that ad? They made it sound like Republicans were evil incarnate and wanted to hurt and persecute people just for the fun of it.
But amazingly to me it worked. Those ads seemed to be playing non-stop and people must have believed them. There was no big scandal against his opponent, Bob Dole. There was also no big foreign policy win for Clinton, or any other change that would explain the polls suddenly turning on a dime and Clinton won in a landslide. It was baffling to me. Who could have been so stupid as to believe that simplistic nonsense?
Now I know. It was people like rask.
