Usually I find what turns people off about "the devout christian act" is the kind of outward projection we see from the Roy Moore guy in Alabama: a self-righteous, holier-than-though presentation of self.
I don't see any of that in this one story about Freeze. Do you?
Is it possible that a person, even a high profile public person, can make horrible, amoral decisions and even break the most solemn of vows to another person - and then confess those actions, ask for forgiveness and be forgiven - and then actually be changed on the other side?
If that's possible, should that person talk about it so that others might see themselves in him and decide that they too can change?
If it's not possible then, man, this life sucks.
