That is without a doubt a fireable offense. Was it a criminal offense? Not what he said to the VP but that is different than what he is being charged with.

He was NOT fired for lying to the FBI. He was fired when he lied to Pence and then Pence went on the record with what Flynn told him and that was later contradicted by the leaked information.
